I am really enjoying Sam Altman’s Stanford course “How to Start A Start-Up” and thought this session was relevant to any entrepreneur who needs to think about (a) building the product / service while (b) also building her/his company while (c) also growing as a leader her/himself.  Often people can only focus on building the product and then realize they’re now running a company that just doesn’t feel right, or they’re not scaling at the same rate – or faster – as the business requires.

I’ve been experimenting with an organizational framework / model that uses the Golden Circle as the foundation or backbone for approaching culture and company building as an integrated design process. More on that later, but for now pay special attention to how the leaders talk about what they value and how that was used to hire people. Some of them are combining the concepts of personal attributes (quick learner) with personal values (someone who truly values creativity), but all were clear that the initial team has a huge impact on the culture, and indeed the success, of the company.
